Security cylinder
A security cylinder is a cylinder with core pull protection. This prevents a burglar from turning a screw in the cylinder and then pulling the screw and cylinder out of the lock together.
As you can see in the video, it is otherwise very easy for burglars to pull open your lock.
With the right, secure cylinder lock on your doors, you can outsmart criminals!

SKG star system
The number of stars tells you how burglar-resistant a lock is. The more stars the lock has, the stronger and more secure the lock is.
1 star: standard security: 3 minutes burglar resistance.
2 stars: heavy security: 3 minutes of independent burglar resistance.
3 stars: extra heavy security: 5 minutes of independent burglar resistance.
So always make sure you have a SKG lock on your door. We recommend that you always choose at least 2 stars. Locksmith 365 offers you many options.
Replace your cylinder lock yourself? These are the most common mistakes made
Are you handy and think you can manage to replace a lock yourself? Then make sure you at least avoid making the following mistakes.
Error 1: You are removing the wrong screw from the lock
When replacing a multi-point lock, remove the screws from the lock. If you unexpectedly take out the wrong screw, you are very likely to damage the entire lock mechanism. To still correct this, you will need to hire a professional to take the lock apart and put it back together again.
Error 2: You do not properly replace the screw holding the cylinder
When inserting the new cylinder, do not put back the screw holding the cylinder properly. This causes the cylinder to be loose in the lock. You may then find that you cannot get the door to open. Very annoying.
Error 3: You do not secure the cylinder firmly enough
If you replace the cylinder of the overlay lock yourself, there is a good chance that you will not secure the cylinder firmly enough. It is also possible that the tail of the cylinder is not quite mounted in the right place. The key can then turn freely in the cylinder, with the result that the lock no longer opens, but only turns.
Error 4: You are over-tightening the cylinder
If you tighten the cylinder too tightly, you will find that the lock turns very stiffly. As a result, eventually the key may break off in the cylinder or the cylinder may get stuck in the lock.
Afraid of making any of the above mistakes? Then call in a professional locksmith! Request a quote from Locksmith 365. Email your question to info@slotenmaker365-amsterdam.nl.

Frequently asked questions about cylinder lock replacement price and more
Replacing cylinder lock, is that something I can do myself?
Yes, replacing a cylinder lock can certainly be attempted by yourself if you are handy and possess the right, professional tools. However, we do not recommend replacing an overlay lock yourself. This type of lock is very sensitive and complicated. Therefore, we do recommend that you hire a professional locksmith to replace an overlay lock.
What does it cost to replace a cylinder in my lock?
The cost of cylinder lock replacement that we charge depends entirely on the type of lock you have on your door. For an accurate indication of our prices, please refer to our cost page. There, for each lock, the cost of replacing just the cylinder or the entire lock is explained.
Can a burglar always enter my house no matter what kind of locks I have?
Yes in the end it did. When a burglar has his sights set on your home, insists on entering, has plenty of time and is not afraid to use force in the process, you have little chance of stopping him.
However, most burglars are occasional burglars. This is about 95 percent of burglars. They break into houses where it is easiest to do so. Therefore, if you have better locks on your doors than your neighbors, they are more likely to go to your neighbors than to your home.
You can ensure with a simple upgrade to your locks that a burglar will think three times about breaking into your home given the amount of time and noise involved.
Aren’t all cylinders about the same? Apart from the brand printed on them, don’t they all come from the same factory?
No, this is absolutely not true. Some cylinder locks are cheap, imported locks from Asia. Other locks come from Germany and Switzerland and have higher standards in terms of materials and tests performed.
Herewith a striking example. A very cheap cylinder can be broken in less than 10 seconds with a flathead screwdriver. Demolishing a high-quality cylinder requires more. That one is not so easily broken. A professional locksmith still needs 15 minutes of drilling for that.
We do not recommend buying a cylinder lock at the hardware store. These are low quality in most cases.
Is the security of my door determined by the quality of the cylinder?
No, the security of the door is determined by the lock mechanism of which the cylinder is a part. A lock is as weak as its weakest link, and that weakest link need not always be the cylinder.
The security of your door is also determined by the number of locks you have on your door and whether you still have an anti-intrusion strip mounted on the door, for example.
On the other hand, a burglar does look first at the type of cylinder you have on your door. Based on that, he will decide whether to attempt a break-in at your home or pick another house.
What is the difference between the different brands of cylinder locks available?
This is difficult to explain to you in a few sentences. There are so many different types, sizes and qualities of locks available that we cannot give you a simple answer to this question.
You can call us at any time to speak directly to a locksmith who will provide you with FREE advice.

Replacing cylinder lock: how to do it
Mortise lock: cylinder replacement lock
Replacing a mortise lock, is relatively easy. If you are a little handy and possess the right tools, you should be able to do this.
Still, like much other technical work, a lock replacement sometimes requires more knowledge and experience to proceed properly. Whether this is the case for your lock cannot be said or checked in advance. Only during lock replacement will this become apparent.
It is important to mention to you, however, that if your home has contents insurance and there has been an attempted burglary, the insurance will almost never pay out if you do not have a professional mortise lock on your door that has also not been installed by a professional locksmith. If you decide to replace your mortise lock yourself, take the following steps:
- 1. Open the lock.
- 2. Loosen the screw on the side of the door at the level of the keyhole.
- 3. Push the cylinder out of the lock while gently turning the key in the cylinder with your other hand until you find the spot where the cylinder can actually come out of the lock. Sometimes it helps if you loosen the screws on the hardware and lever a little.
- 4. Insert the new cylinder into the lock the same way you removed the old cylinder. Again gently turn the key around until the cylinder is turned to the correct position.
- 5. Turn the screw back into place.

Step-up lock: cylinder replacement lock
Replacing an overlay lock is very complicated. You will need special tools for this, such as a hacksaw and pliers. In addition, it is very accurate work that takes an inexperienced handyman at least an hour.
As with much other technical work, replacing a lock cylinder sometimes requires more experience and knowledge of locks than you might think. Whether your lock is relatively easy or difficult to replace cannot be indicated exactly in advance. This is something that will become apparent during replacement.
We do want to inform you that if your home has contents insurance and there has been an attempted burglary, the insurance company will almost never pay out if you do not have a professional padlock on your door that has also not been installed by a professional locksmith. Want to replace your overlay lock yourself? Then adhere to the following steps:
- 1.Remove the screws holding the lock mechanism in place.
- 2. Remove the entire lock mechanism using a screwdriver.
- 3. If all goes well, the cylinder is now only connected to the door via a plate and two screws.
- 4. Now remove the two screws and remove the cylinder.
- 5. Before you now insert the new cylinder into the lock, be sure that the two screws that will hold it in place are exactly the same size as the old screws. If the old screws are not damaged and still fit exactly, you can use them as well. However, this is usually not the case.
- 6. Insert the new cylinder into the lock. Make sure the cylinder is straight in the lock. Otherwise, the lock will not work properly and the lock will not fully open or close.
- 7. When the new cylinder is in place, cut off the tail of the cylinder sticking out until it protrudes between 5 and 10 mm. The exact length depends on the type of overlay lock.
- 8. Step 8 is a complicated step. You are now going to put the lock mechanism back on the door. While doing this, make sure that the protruding tail of the cylinder fits precisely into the lock mechanism so that it makes contact with the rest of the lock and everything functions as it should. Sometimes it helps to turn the key gently (45 degrees maximum both ways) until you hear a click. At that point, you can be sure that the cylinder is secure.
- 9. Finally, replace the screws holding the lock mechanism.
Overhead lock with a fixed cylinder replaced
Replacing an overlay lock cylinder is not easy, especially with a fixed cylinder. It takes a lot of time and effort. In fact, you must replace the entire overlay lock, not just the cylinder. In this way, you can disassemble a cylinder lock with fixed cylinder:
- 1. Remove all screws from the lock. Both on the front and the side.
- 2. Now place the overlay lock on the door. Does the new lock have different dimensions than the old one? Poke away some wood with a chisel. Make sure the lock fits exactly in the hole of the door.
- 3. Check that the latch and deadbolt fall into the appropriate holes in the doorframe. The latch and deadbolt are the parts of the lock that protrude from the side that you can push in. Is that not the case? Then chisel a space in the doorframe where the latch and deadbolt fall.
