Time to replace your door lock?

When is it time to replace your lock? At least when your key is stolen. Whoever stole your key will probably be at your doorstep within a short time. Perhaps your key got into the wrong hands in some other way. For example, because you gave your loved one a key to your door. The lover, however, is now a nasty ex.

Another thing to look out for is a sliding door. A sliding door is very prone to burglary. Most sliding doors do not have burglar-proof door locks. At Locksmith 365, we will replace your old sliding door lock for a burglar-resistant sliding door lock.

Security lock

Not every door lock works equally well against burglars. All door locks can be broken open. What is important is how long it takes a burglar to open a lock. An average burglary lasts 30 seconds. A burglar wants the loot inside and gone as quickly as possible. A door lock that takes a long time to force is called a security lock.

How do you know if it will take a burglar a long time to open your door lock? There is a special seal of approval for locks: the SKG seal of approval (Foundation for Quality Facade Construction). The SKG steps into the shoes of a burglar. The question they want an answer to is: how long does it take a burglar to open a lock?

A lock  that meets the requirements of the SKG receives 1 to 3 stars:SKG3@2x

  • 1 star: standard burglar resistance, less than 3 minutes burglar resistance
  • 2 stars: heavy burglar resistance, minimum 3 minutes burglar resistance
  • 3 stars: extra heavy burglar resistance, minimum 5 minutes burglar resistance

We recommend choosing a lock with at least 2 stars. We have already told you that burglars usually get their loot in 30 seconds. Three minutes to get a door lock open is really far too long for a burglar. They try for a while, but if they don’t succeed quickly enough then they take off. An extra safe feeling is obtained by secure door locks.

Burglary protection front door

The main way into your home is your front door. Hence, it is important to do burglary protection front door. How do you make sure burglars can’t just open your door?

  • Always lock your front door when you leave.
  • Have a peephole made in the door,
so you know who is on your doorstep.
  • Provide adequate lighting outside, especially in front of your front door.
Burglars prefer to work in the dark so that the chances of being seen by someone are minimized.
  • Have good door locks installed. Security locks are hard to crack. We at Locksmith 365 install security locks for you.

Types of door locks

Door locks are classified into two categories:

  • Master locks: The most important lock on your door.
  • Accessory locks: Locks that you place above and below a main lock and provide additional security.

Principal ditches can be further divided into:

  • Overhead locks: An overlay lock is placed on your door. Slip-on locks have a cylinder. A cylinder is a tube into which the key falls. Some overlay locks have a loose cylinder. In that case, the cylinder is easily removed from your lock. Other overlay locks have fixed cylinder. This cylinder is fixed in the lock.
  • Mortise locks: These locks are only suitable for wooden doors. A mortise lock is installed in your door. A mortise lock has a loose cylinder.
  • Narrow Insert Locks: These locks are made to be installed in plastic and metal doors. A narrow mortise lock is higher and shallower than a regular mortise lock.
  • Espagnolettes: These locks consist of long rods. There is a recessed and a surface-mounted version.
  • Keypad locks: Old-fashioned locks that are easy for burglars to break open.
  • Multi-point locks: Locks that lock your door in several places.
  • Narrow-lock multipoint locks: Less deep and higher locks than regular multi-point locks.

Accessory locks can also be further subdivided:

  • Pen locks: Inexpensive and very popular. However, pin locks also have disadvantages. The key is very large and incorrect assembly or misuse often results in a broken lock.
  • Accessory mortise locks: These locks are more expensive than mortise locks. The advantage of side insert locks is that they are less likely to break and have a smaller key.
  • Side Mount Locks: These locks often open with a rotary knob. A secondary overlay lock is also often used on storage and general entrance doors as the main lock.

Replacing an overlay lock or mortise lock with a loose cylinder

You replace an overlay lock with a loose cylinder and replace a mortise lock in the same way. If your lock case is broken, you need to replace the lock entirely. In other situations, replace only the cylinder. Here’s how to proceed:

  1. Look at the side of the lock. There is a screw at the height of the keyhole. Unscrew it.
  2. Insert the key into the lock and turn it slightly to the left or right.
  3. Pull the cylinder out of the lock.
  4. Maybe it won’t work out. In that case, the cylinder is probably trapped by the hardware. Unscrew the hardware and pull the cylinder out of the door.
  5. Insert the new cylinder into the cylinder hole.
  6. Retighten the screw that was at the level of the keyhole.
  7. Do a test to see if the lock works. In doing so, leave the door open. Just test if the lock works. Turn the lock open and closed. In doing so, do keep the door open to avoid being locked in if the lock does not work.

Replacing an overlay lock with a fixed cylinder

An overlay lock with a fixed cylinder is comparatively time-consuming. This is because you are replacing the entire lock and not just the cylinder. This is how you replace an overlay lock with a fixed cylinder:

  1. Remove all screws from the old padlock.
  2. Take the lock off your door.
  3. Get the new lock.
  4. Put the lock against your door.
  5. Screw on the lock.
  6. Look at the side of the lock. If all goes well, there are two parts of the lock protruding from your door: the latch and the deadbolt. See if they fall into the holes made specifically for them in your doorframe. Is that not the case? Take a chisel and chisel out cavities in the appropriate area of your doorframe.

Replacing an espagnolette

Espagnolette locks have many differences between them. Therefore, unfortunately, we cannot provide a step-by-step guide of how to replace an espagnolette.

Replacing a keypad lock

A keypad lock is fairly easy to replace:

  1. Remove screws from the lock.
  2. Place the new lock in the cavity of the door where your old lock used to be.
  3. Screw on the new lock.

Replacing a (narrow-lock) multi-point lock

Replacing a multi-point lock is not easy. We recommend that you unscrew your old multi-point lock and take it to a hardware store or lock store. Have your old multi-point lock measured and ask for a multi-point lock with the same dimensions.

It is a good idea to ask how the multi-point lock you have chosen should be installed. With multi-point locks, this sometimes differs. We therefore give you a general roadmap of how to replace a multi-point lock:

  1. There is a screw in the door handle. Unscrew the screw.
  2. Remove the door handles from the door.
  3. The hardware are metal plates placed around your lock to protect your lock. Unscrew all the screws on the hardware and remove the hardware from your door.
  4. Insert the key into the keyhole and turn it a quarter turn to the right or left.
  5. Using the key, pull the cylinder out of the lock.
  6. Using a drill, remove all the screws of the multi-point lock.
  7. Take a screwdriver and insert it into the hole of the door handle.
  8. Move the screwdriver in the direction of the door hole to snap off the multi-point latch.
  9. Remove the multipoint lock from your door.
  10. To be sure, check that the old and new multi-point locks are the same size
  11. Place the new lock in the location of your old lock.
  12. Push the new multi-point lock firmly along the entire length of the door.
  13. Screw on the multi-point latch.
  14. Take a new cylinder and insert the key.
  15. Place the cylinder in the hole of your lock.
  16. Place the hardware on the inside and outside against the door and tighten the screws.
  17. Put the door handle on the outside into the hole.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an anti-intrusion strip?

An anti-intrusion strip is a rock-solid barrier against a break-in at home or business premises. This system consists of two steel strips attached to door or window and frame. They hook together when closing door or window.

With anti-intrusion strips, it is no longer possible to get between door and doorframe or window and window frame on the outside with tools or passes to open door or window.

Are there different brands of mortise locks?

Yes, there are different front door locks such as, Nemef, Lips, Fiam, Ivana, Ikon and Zaso mortise locks. In most cases, these mortise locks come with an SKG logo.

Besides installing anti-burglar strips, what measures can I take in terms of burglary prevention?

Other measures we recommend in addition to anti-burglary strips and anti-knocking cylinders and PKVW seals to prevent a burglary are the following:

  • Go for security locks
  • Choose locks with the SKG seal of approval
  • Purchase an alarm system
  • Anti-Kickback
