This article discusses the solutions below:

1. Get lock moving with lock spray

On an online forum, we came across a huge variety of solutions, including lock spray. We came across this information:

Temperature changes, heat and solid freezing temperatures affect the lock. Not every lock can withstand the various weather conditions. A good solution is to use lock spray. This is an excellent solution that often works immediately with cylinder locks. It is water displacing and water repellent.

Other means of cleaning a lock and getting it moving are a bit more “crude.” It’s enough to spray a little lock spray over the moving parts.

Very is very simple: if a key does not turn in a lock, I use a lubricant in the form of lock spray.

2. Have you already thought of your spare key?

Key stuck in the ignition and there is no movement in the lock? That’s annoying. It may sound like an unnecessary tip, but in many cases this is an easy solution. On all sorts of forums, we read stories about using a spare key:

A key can only open a lock when the key is perfectly straight. This seems obvious and absolutely no “rocketscience,” but often people do not consider the fact that the key is accidentally bent slightly. The key then no longer fits the lock. Therefore, do not try to insert the bent key into the lock, even with a little more force behind it. A key can get stuck in the lock, break off, or damage (irreparably) the inside of the cylinder. Check the spare key! Often these keys are still completely straight and you stand a good chance of turning your car key “just like that” again.

The simplest solution is: get the spare key! After all, you made it right? Right? If not you can do that at any professional key maker. Within minutes you will have a spare key and sometimes you will get the second one for free.

Let’s try the spare key first!

3. Key does not go into ignition: with WD40 it does

Your key won’t turn in your car lock and your is car lock stuck? Please consider WD40. Lubricating an ignition switch or lubricating the lock on the outside helps in many cases. It is a commonly mentioned solution on all kinds of forums. Be sure to use WD40 only in emergencies. It is fairly thick and heavy stuff, so in the future it could possibly cause problems. On one of these forums, we got an answer to this question:

My key won’t turn, car won’t start. Now what? My neighbor indicated that you should then spray WD40 in it. I was somewhat skeptical, but it okay … worth a try. WD40 is a type of silicone spray that makes the key slide and run easier. You can buy WD40 at any DIY store. WD40 is many times better than oil. This is due to the fact that oil attracts and retains dust and dirt. Then when you put the key back in your pocket, dust gets on it and you push all that back into the lock. I sprayed some WD40 in the lock and an hour later the engine was humming wonderfully again.

Preferably use wd40 for this, which lubricates and dissolves dirt and deposits.

Spray well into the lock, all the mess will disappear. And it dissipates by itself so it gets dry again. Then possibly with some additional WD40 spray some more, it will keep working smoothly.Good luck.

WD40 rules. It has always helped well. Inject and 50x the key back and forth.

4. Unscrew the lock and pry a bit

It may well help to loosen the lock a bit on one side. The lock has a number of internal elements that can shift, blocking your lock. Key stuck in the ignition switch? Or does your car key not turn in ignition? Various forums on the Internet discussed the following solution:

Have you ever thought here? A car lock often consists of a cylinder containing a number of pallets. These may, as time goes on, “run” and shift a bit. Often shifting pallets cause the lock to malfunction. I called a friend of mine and he told me that works well if you unscrew the lock on one side and wiggle it a little with the key. I loosened the screw of the lock on the left side. Not completely loose, but a little. Then I wiggled and shook my key a bit in the lock. I tightened the lock tadaaa … everything worked again. Apparently everything had fallen into place. You can lubricate your ignition switch car, but you can also try my way right away. Unscrew lock and pry: it works for me!

It may be that the cylinder has shifted slightly in the lock, so it no longer turns properly. Slightly loosen the screw and try to move the lock slightly.

5. Graphite powder is definitely an option

Your key won’t lock, and once your key is in, it turns with tremendous difficulty. It is a common complaint. On the other hand, it is a problem that is so fixable. Graphite powder is a much-discussed solution on all kinds of forums:

My key car is not running. Now what? A colleague of mine indicated that I could also use graphite powder for stuck lock. I had never heard of it before, but made it anyway. If it doesn’t help, it doesn’t hurt. But it worked like a train. I put some of the extremely refined powder into the lock and hours later the lock opened again. So I myself have had good experiences with graphite powder. Hopefully you too!

Graphite powder works super, especially preventively. I would try with graphite powder first. For sale at Gamma and the like. Oil traps dust and becomes viscous due to dust particles.

Try spraying some graphite powder into the lock. You can just buy this at the better DIY store: take the key in and out a few times and turn the lock a few times.

6. Is your car lock stuck? Check your steering lock

Are you already in the car and suddenly you think, “My car key won’t turn in the ignition?” That’s possible, it is common for a key not to turn in a car ignition. On the Internet, we came across many forums discussing the use of the steering lock:

The other day I got into my car and there was no movement in my steering wheel and car lock, as if my car lock was stuck. I was trying all kinds of things for my feeling. In the end, it turned out to be my steering wheel lock. It also locks your lock and makes it look like your lock is stuck. Yet it is very easy to remove this blockage. Try prying and pulling on the steering wheel. Pry a little from left to right and you will see more movement in the wheel and your lock will cooperate as well.

While pulling the key, try moving your steering wheel back and forth a little so that the steering lock can pop loose.

Just twist and pry a little on the steering wheel when trying to turn the key.

7. Call a professional locksmith

In some cases, lubricating the ignition switch is not enough. It requires a true expert in the form of a locksmith. On the Internet, we came across an awful lot of forums discussing this solution:

At first I thought, “Help! My key does not turn in the lock of my car, but this disappeared like snow in the sun when I called the locksmith. The locksmith was quickly on site and had this job done within 5 minutes. It is a nice feeling to feel that you are in good hands. A key car is not running and that can have several reasons. I had tried all sorts of things, but couldn’t get it to work. The locksmith discussed in advance what he was going to do and what it would cost. A nice feeling!

It could be that those things are frozen inside the lock, but this is more of a question for a locksmith.

With limited knowledge, you can have a locksmith come.

It may sound crazy, but you can also just call a locksmith. These are not only for the locks of houses, caravans, scooters but also just for car locks.

8. Tried the other doors yet?

It is common that when people stand in front of a closed car door, they forget about the other doors. The focus becomes only on the problem and the other solutions are forgotten. Several forums on the Internet discussed the following solution:

The key car is not turning, now what? That’s exactly what I was thinking. I was outside in the rain and my lock was not cooperating. Can happen, but does not take away from the fact that it is annoying. I was concentrating and thinking about the solution. Then suddenly I had a lucid moment and decided to try the other doors. I succeeded! I entered through the passenger side, crawled behind the wheel and started the car. Despite losing track for a while, I managed to get the car open.

This afternoon I wanted to get into my car after work but the key in the door lock wouldn’t turn all the way and I couldn’t get the lock open. Before, it did not always open immediately and it helped to turn the key the other way (as if you were locking it) and then I could open the door. Now I only had a little ‘play’ but the door wouldn’t open… In the end I climbed into my car through the passenger door and got home. With the knob on the inside I can open the door as usual and that’s how I locked it again. I did make another attempt with the key, but I couldn’t get it locked either.
