Research: Total Number of (Attempted) Burglaries in Amsterdam in 2017

A home burglary can have a big impact on the victims, many victims no longer feel safe and think about moving after a burglary. Strangers have entered your home uninvited and taken items of (emotional) value. There are about 140 burglaries per day in the Netherlands, which amounts to about 49,315 per year. In Amsterdam, there were 5,645 (attempted) burglaries in 2017. The number of burglaries + the number of attempted burglaries added together.

Based on figures from Drimble and Politie.nl, we analyzed how safe your neighborhood is. Does your district fall into the Red zone? That means there are a lot of burglaries in your neighborhood. Does your district fall into the green zone? That means your neighborhood is safe and burglaries are low. North-East and the Center are averaging 5 (attempted) burglaries per 1,000 residents. The fewest (attempted) burglaries were committed in the South and West districts with 4 and 3 burglaries per 1,000 residents.

Below is the map of Amsterdam divided into zip codes. The number of residents in a zip code was divided by the number of burglaries (attempted) committed in that neighborhood in 2017. Amsterdam has an average of 5 (attempted) burglaries for every 1,000 residents. As seen on the map, zip codes 1042,1046,1060 and 1104 had the most (attempted) burglaries in 2017. In those zip codes, there were 10 (attempted) burglaries per 1,000 residents. The most burglary-free zip codes to live in Amsterdam are 1108, 1026, 1079,1073 and 1098 here there were only 2 burglaries in every 1,000 residents.

In Which District Do the Most Burglaries Fail?

To calculate where on average the most number of burglaries fail, we plotted the number of attempted burglaries against the number of successful burglaries. When homes are properly secured, burglars take longer and drop out faster. The easiest areas to break into are Center and South, here most burglaries succeed and there are the fewest attempted burglaries. The best-secured districts of the city are Southeast and New West, where the fewest burglaries succeed and more attempts are made.

In What Months Are There the Most Break-ins?

The months when you should pay extra attention to burglary are the dark months. This includes large outliers to the months of January, February and March. 1/5 of all (attempted) burglaries are committed in these months. Interestingly, June is overwhelmingly the month with the fewest burglaries or attempted burglaries.
