SKG puts itself in the burglar’s shoes

SKG locks move inside the burglar

SKG tests hardware by putting themselves in the shoes of the burglar. How does a burglar get in? And with what tools? Using various burglar tools such as a hammer, screwdriver and other machines, SKG tests how long it takes for the lock to finally open.

If a lock is sufficiently resistant to burglary within x number of minutes, the lock obtains an SKG seal of approval. In this way, the locks are SKG approved. Several classifications exist within the hallmark. The ratings are stars in three categories, called SKG stars.

But what do SKG stars stand for?

SKG Stars

Manufacturers of hardware have their locks tested, certified and approved by SKG. All locks are tested on standard quality windows and doors. Locks are retested over time to see if locks meet requirements. In fact, burglars are inventing more and more ways to get in faster.

SKG tests locks using the so-called star system. The number of stars indicates how burglar-resistant a lock is. The more stars, the stronger and more secure a lock is.

The star rating consists of:

1 star: The lock is burglar-resistant.

SKG locks with 1 star mean, that the lock is non-autonomous burglar proof. This means that these locks are placed in combination with one other equivalent or stronger SKG lock. 1 star can withstand about 3 minutes of burglary.

2 stars : The lock is heavy burglary resistant.

Locks with 2 stars are resistant to 3 minutes of burglary. From two stars up, locks can be placed independently.

3 stars: The lock is extra heavy burglary resistant.

Locks with 3 stars keep burglars out for 5 minutes.

Breaking into a home in 3 to 5 minutes, can seem comparatively smooth. For a burglar, 60 seconds is already time-consuming. A burglar wants to enter a house quickly. On average, it takes a burglar 30 seconds to get in. If this fails, he soon drops out. The risk of being caught red-handed during a burglary is most risky when breaking into a home.

SKG Checkmark

In addition to the star logo, SKG  (since 2010) also uses the symbol with the checkmark in it. The checkmark is an addition to the SKG products according to the Politie Keurmerk Veilig Wonen. The symbol consists of 1 or two check marks. The checkmark was introduced for products that are burglary-resistant but not lockable.

® sign

A tested SKG lock should not lack the ® mark. It indicates that the lock has been approved according to the latest regulations.

Police Hallmark Safe Housing

The Police Mark Safe Housing is an initiative of the police who have partnered with municipalities, businesses and housing associations. The label was created to reduce the number of burglaries. However, to obtain the seal of approval, you must meet several requirements. A house with SKG locks is one of the requirements to obtain a PKVW seal of approval.

Other requirements are:

  • Residents are adequately informed about burglary prevention. Burglary prevention involves taking measures to prevent a break-in.
  • Ample lighting is provided around the door. Most burglaries are committed during the dark months. If no lighting is on around and inside the home, this gives a burglar the opportunity to gain entry. With a timer on the indoor and outdoor lights, you can prevent this.
  • Smoke detectors are present on every floor of the house. When a fire occurs, you should be alerted in time.
  • The front door is easy to see from the street.
  • Doors and windows are secured by locks with SKG certification.

The Politie Keurmerk Veilig Wonen can be obtained in part by making your home by Locksmith Amsterdam 365 to be secured with approved SKG locks. Are you interested in an SKG lock? Locksmith 365 installs a variety of SKG locks, from 1 to 3 stars.
